Chapter 9 – Running for the Hills

The drive to Hillside took us almost an hour, most of which we spent crawling through the city centre at a snail's pace. While the North-South axis of Malena was well-served by the Rasher, going anywhere East required passing through the warren of admittedly charming small town alleys and cute, little streets. And in the afternoon, these streets inevitably clogged up. Not so much with cars or those open horse carriages doing scenic tours of the city, but mostly with tourists on foot, standing around in the middle of the street being either lost or gawking at something. Most of the time, it worked out more or less, but today apparently one of the larger restaurants was adding street decorations for its fiftieth anniversary, and that had been just that little bit too much.

It was Mistress Sirenkov driving this time, and I was impressed with her patience, though Alexej didn't seem like someone prone to road rage, either. Instead, he had crossed his arms and sunk back into his seat, seemingly fast asleep. It reminded me of the saying that a good soldier always takes a chance to sleep when he can get it.

After the morning's excitement and the rich lunch, I was feeling drowsy as well, but I didn't want to miss a single minute of this grand adventure. So I glued myself to the window and enjoyed the view. There was so much to see.

Throngs of tourists queued up to visit Saint Cornelius Cathedral, including a group of two dozen demons, which I found particularly amusing. Three young women handed out flyers for the Grinny Pig amusement park while wearing only pink bikinis, fake snouts, ears and curly tails. They were quite obviously having the time of their lives, laughing and gesturing and taking pictures with tourists. A Kyothari noble in bright yellow robes animatedly chattered with his tourist guide while being trailed by his half-dozen, white-veiled wives. A distraught father and his bunch of small children were being expertly taken care of by a rescue pig and its handler. Two youngsters in kitchen whites struggled to carry an enormous fish, apparently on the way from the market to their restaurant.

In short, all of Malena in a nutshell.

Once we left the crowded city centre behind, we drove through Farmstead. It had been a low income, residential and agricultural area before tourism came to Malicorn. The real estate there had quickly changed hands to developers who built a couple of sprawling hotel complexes, only to have the late Duke put a stop to any such developments to keep them from ruining the look of his capital city. While a few, large hotels remained, they were now evenly mixed with smaller, cuter, much more expensive ones and lots and lots of restaurants, bars, cafes and boutiques that sold everything a tourist's heart might desire.

Once we were almost out of Farmstead, Jamie called to inform us that the Doctor was still at home and having his house's smart system warm up a bacon pie for him.
